He announced the remission exercising his powers under Article 45 of the Constitution.As per the announcement, remission has been granted to male prisoners above 65 years of age, females above 60 years, females in prison with their children and persons under 18 years of age who have served one-third of their sentence.The remission of sentence is not applicable to prisoners sentenced for murder, espionage, anti-state activities, adultery, theft, robbery, kidnapping, terrorism, financial crimes and damage to the national exchequer.
